The Rohingya Crisis, an Interview with Consul General Tareque Muhammad, Consulate of Bangladesh
There are nearly 1 million stateless Rohingya refugees who have fled persecution from Myanmar since the 1990s. On August 25, 2017, the Myanmar military began a deadly crackdown on its Rohingya Muslim population. The ethnic cleansing campaign, categorized as genocide by both the UN & various human rights groups, has involved mass killing, rape, and arson, forcing an estimated 740,000 Rohingya to have fled to Bangladesh and other neighboring countries. Up to date, Myanmar's government has rebuffed UN and ICC's efforts to investigate and adjudicate these alleged atrocities. I sit down with Consul General Tareque Muhammad, currently posted in the Consulate General of Bangladesh's diplomatic wing in Los Angeles. Before his post in the United States, Mr. Muhammad served as Deputy Chief of Mission for the Bangladesh Embassy in Yangoon Myanmar 2014 - 2017. He then returned to Bangladesh in Aug. 2017 to serve as Director-General of Foreign Ministry Southeast Asia 2017.
